EDUCATIONAL MAPS

The following maps were designed in recent years by uttarakhand.org founder Rajiv Rawat for educational purposes. They build on maps previously designed for the uttarakhand.org web site over the past decade. They are offered here free of charge, although creditation to Rajiv and uttarakhand.net would be much appreciated. Please note that these maps are for representation purposes only and boundaries in particular should in no way be interpreted as authoritative. If you would like scalable high quality PDFs of these maps, please contact Rajiv.

The two month scientific survey traversed 350 villages, 16 alpine pastures, 20 Kharaks (high altitude cattle sheds), 15 zones and 3 valleys affected by earthquakes and landslides, 8 centres of the Chipko movement, 15 Chattees (ancient pilgrimage camping sites), 5 Himalayan pilgrimage routes, 5 tribal zones, and 3 regions of Indo-Tibetan trade activities.

COLLABORATIVE ATLAS PROJECT

Over the past five years, Dan Jantzen, an alumnus and former teacher at the Woodstock School in Mussoorie, has been collaborating with PAHAR to collect GPS data of Uttarakhand, in order to construct a comprehensive road and place map of the region. This data was recently plotted onto Google Earth and is being made available here in both kmz and kml format.

Make sure to right click and save to disk:

  • Uttarakhand Road Map (kmz)
  • Uttarakhand Road Map (kml)
  • Uttarakhand Place Names (kmz)
  • Uttarakhand Place Names (kml)

The treasure trove of data is accurate to a resolution of approximately 10 meters, yet some roads, and many villages and towns, are yet to be measured and included in the database.

As a work in progress, users of this data are requested to submit comments, complaints and indications of additional roads to be mapped to Dan Jantzen at danjantzen [@] mindspring.com. Volunteers willing to help collect additional GPS data, to complete the mapping of Uttarakhand, are also needed. (- Dan Jantzen, also posted @ rungmung.net)
